UPDATES - T.S. Hanna and Hurricane Ike

As of 1200 UTC on 4 September 2008, Tropical Storm Hanna was located approximately 280 mi/455 km east-southeast of Nassau, Bahamas, and 760 mi/1,220 km south-southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina. The storm is moving northwest at approximately 12 mph/10 kt and has maximum sustained winds of approximately 70 mph/60 kt with higher gusts. The storm is expected to pass to the east of the northwestern central Bahamas. However, the Bahamian government will likely close Lynden Pindling International Airport (MYNN/NAS) in Nassau. U.S. border pre-clearance facilities are closed at Lynden Pindling International Airport and Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport (MYGF/FPO). Reports indicate that airports in Inagua, Mayaguana, Crooked Island, Acklins, San Salvador, Deadman’s Cay and Stella Maris Long Island are currently closed. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the storm will likely strengthen to a Category 1 before it makes landfall between North and South Carolina late on 5 September or early on 6 September. Authorities are preparing evacuation plans for coastal areas.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Ike strengthened to a Category 4 storm on 3 September. As of 0900 UTC on 4 September 2008, the storm was located approximately 550 mi/885 km northeast of the Leeward Islands. The storm is moving west-northwest at 28 mph/24 kt, but is expected to gradually turn to the west-southwest over the next 48 hours. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 145 mph/126 kt with higher gusts. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the storm will likely reach the Bahamas on 8 September.

Tropical Storm Josephine is located approximately 465 mi/745 km west of the Cape Verde Islands. The storm is moving west-northwest at 10 mph/8 kt and has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph/52 kt with higher gusts. According to meteorologists at Wilkens Weather Technologies, the storm is expected to continue its west-northwest direction for the next five days.
